"A theatrical version of a rambunctious teenage brother with green hair."

-- Judith Newmark, St. Louis Post Dispatch

"The red headed bastard child of New Line Theatre."

-- Corey Stulce, Vital Voice

Out of Line Productions is the non-musical arm of New Line Theatre, producing shows that fall outside New Line’s regular focus, giving New Line artists and audiences a chance to try something different once in a while.

So far, Out of Line has produced two shows, the St. Louis premiere of David Dillon’s off Broadway hit comedy Party in August 1998 and August 2003, and the world premiere of Scott Miller’s comedy Head Games, about New Line's experiences producing Party, in August 1999. Head Games went on to be produced in Los Angeles, London, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Future productions are planned in San Diego and Italy.

In 1998, the Post Dispatch called Party "consistently amusing and sometimes even hilarious." The Riverfront Times called it "light, funny, and mildly shocking." The West End Word called it "the type of party that you have heard about, thought was tremendously outrageous and hard to believe, and wish you had been invited to."

The Edinburgh Evening News called Head Games “bold, sensitive, and brilliantly witty... honest, outrageous, and screamingly funny..."  The Riverfront Times said, "Miller provides an intelligent and interesting context, genuinely witty and clever lines, and a wholesomeness and honesty both unexpected — under the circumstances — and exhilarating. . . This, besides the verbal brilliance, is where Miller takes Head Games well beyond the genre. His director's program note and the piece in last week's RFT tell the audience in advance what Miller is going to do, but it's like a magician's explaining a trick before he performs it and still amazing his spectators.”  The St. Louis Post Dispatch said, “The funniest moment in Head Games occurs when a character questions the artistic integrity of a director who plans to stage a play with gratuitous nudity. The irony is that the actor expressing these sentiments is gratuitously nude. . . Miller is an astute critic, and these questions are obviously important to him. . . The arguments about theater and sexuality are thought provoking, balanced and often amusing.”
