New Line Theatre Off Line's first public performance, in January 2013, was a quirky, decidedly adult evening of
cabaret, featuring the New Generation of New Liners, Taylor Pietz (Evita,
Cry-Baby, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Love Kills, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson),
Zachary Allen Farmer (Hair, Assassins, Urinetown, Return to the
Forbidden Planet, Love Kills, High Fidelity), and Mike Dowdy
(Cry-Baby, bare, Spelling Bee, Forbidden Planet, High Fidelity, The Wild
Party), with music direction by Justin Smolik and direction by Mike Dowdy.
The evening included "You Don't Know / I Am the One"
from Next to Normal, "Little Mary Sunshine" from Reefer Madness,
"Schadenfreude" from Avenue Q, "Don't Know Where You Leave Off" from
The Sweet Smell of Success, "Falling Slowly" from Once,
Dowdy's unique take on "Poor Unfortunate Souls," and other amazing songs.
In summer 2012,
New Line Theatre, "the Bad Boy of Musical Theatre," created a new side
identity called New Line Theatre Off Line, to be a framework for the
New Line actors to explore other music and theatre projects, including New
Line’s own unique brand of adult cabaret, musical improv, and other kinds of
performance opportunities, as well as master classes, workshops, and more,
headed up by New Line actor and Associate Artistic Director Mike Dowdy. |
